What is the difference between topsoil, garden mix, and potting mix?
While they might sound similar, topsoil, garden mix, and potting mix serve distinct purposes in gardening and landscaping.
Topsoil
What it is: The top layer of soil naturally occurring on the earth's surface. It contains organic matter, minerals, and living organisms.
Uses: Ideal for building up garden beds, leveling lawns, and improving overall soil quality. It provides a foundation for plant growth but might require additional amendments for optimal results.
Garden Mix
What it is: A pre-mixed blend of topsoil, compost, and other organic matter, designed to improve soil fertility and structure.
Uses: Perfect for establishing new gardens, revitalising existing beds, and enhancing plant growth. It offers a better starting point than topsoil alone, as it's already enriched with nutrients.
Potting Mix
What it is: A sterile, lightweight blend of materials like peat moss, coir, perlite, vermiculite, and compost, specifically formulated for container gardening.
Uses: Essential for growing plants in pots, planters, and hanging baskets. It provides excellent drainage, aeration, and water retention, crucial for container-grown plants.
In summary:
Topsoil is a natural soil layer, good for building up garden beds.
Garden mix is an enhanced topsoil, ideal for improving overall soil quality.
Potting mix is a specialised blend for container gardening, providing optimal growing conditions.
Choosing the right product depends on your specific gardening needs.
